De Gruyter (legal name: Walter de Gruyter GmbH), now part of De Gruyter Brill, is one of the oldest and most respected independent academic publishing houses in the world, headquartered in Berlin, Germany. It traces its roots back to 1749 when Frederick the Great granted publishing privileges to an educational institution in Berlin. Over the centuries, it merged with and acquired several scholarly presses before consolidating under its current name in 1919.
